Thresholds of Becoming - An exploration of containment, release, and transformation.

Thresholds of Becoming explores the shifting relationship between containment and expression through layered mixed-media paper. Each work traces a different state of emergence—a movement from holding, through pressure and release, toward openness and possibility.

​

Beginning with the structured presence of the vessel, the compositions gradually move through moments of tension, expansion, fragmentation, and dissolution, culminating in an open field where form gives way to space. 

​

All of the elements are created through the same hands-on process that has become central to my practice. I create cardboard templates for individual forms, refining their shapes before tracing and hand-cutting them from painted papers and earlier works. Fragments that might otherwise be discarded are given new life, becoming part of another composition. Through cutting, layering, rearranging, and rebuilding, the physical process itself becomes an expression of transformation.

The recurring floral elements are not simply botanical studies, but visual metaphors—fragments of inner experience taking shape, dispersing, and reconfiguring. Flowers become expressions of what is emerging: something contained that begins to push outward, transform, and find its own form.

The series is ultimately about the space between what has been and what is becoming—the threshold where an existing form begins to change and something new has not yet fully emerged.

Completed works are finished with an archival clear UV-protective coating to help protect the surface and preserve the artwork over time.
